During the 2009-2010 school years, the WFL also went to a class of children in primary (CM2). In collaboration with the teacher, the WFL did a project to assess the amount of rainwater that can be recovered from the roofs of school buildings.

The children also conducted a study on water meter, and compared the volume of rainwater collected with those which they consumed. In addition, students did check on the internet and found 2 tanks of 1m3. These tanks were acquired by the Association and installed in the courtyard of the school by the municipal technical services.  The year therefore ended with the installation of a system for recovering rainwater put in service. Pahou sector : construction of a new water rehabilitation scheme

The presence in the Benin Republic of WFL team (Olusegun Taïwo and Serge Kpoton) in spring 2010 led to the completion of a water supply extension scheme in Pahou. This extension permitted an easier access to water for an entire disadvantaged neighborhood in the city. In particular, it is not necessary any more to these inhabitants to cross a dangerous road, because very busy, for their provisioning in water; this should limit strongly the number of accidents.

Cost of the water scheme : 2800 €

The new water fountain will allow the population of the district no furthermore to have to cross the main road, dangerous crossing which was the cause of numerous accidents.

Apkro Missérété sector: reactivation of the pumping in Amouloko School / Preparation of the project to install solar panels + electric pump

During the mission of july 2009, representatives of the town of Apkro Missérété (area of Porto Novo) requested from WFL members the establishment of an irrigation system to improve the agricultural productivity. WFL therefore began a work of expertise to analyze the most important needs and the most adapted solutions.

This work was mainly led by Serge Kpoton, within the framework of its project of second year of Master's degree Intermediation and Social Development (Montpellier 3 University). After an evaluation of ground and the meeting of the various partners susceptible to bring their assistant to the project, the sugestion of WFL is :

        - to proceed to installations from the drilling located in the school of Amouloko (a recent building exists, the zone is
          monitored),

        - to replace the manual pump, which dates 1993 and which presents signs of failure, by an electric pump powered by
solar panels (to install on school buildings),

        - to use the pump to reload a reservoir allowing to supply with some water for the pupils of the school, and to feed
with water a perimeter(scope) of irrigation,

        - to use a part(party) of the harvests of zone irrigated to supply a school
          canteen (to create).

By this action, which is one approach towards social and solidarity economy, WFL hope to contribute to putting in place changes requested by the population a small local economy (sales of garden products) to generate sufficient resources for the maintenance of the equipment.

This project is designed in partnership with Sebastian LOEB (Professor of electrotechnics at the high school professional Charles Privat in Arles). This professor has planned to make installations in 2011 with fifteen students. On the ground, they will proceed to the implementation of equipments, will make the tests of functioning and will also form a technician capable of proceeding to the necessary reparations. The population of Akpo-

makes from his part a commitment to bring a material and human help.

The mission of the spring 2010 also was the opportunity to meet to Akpro-Missérété all the local officials in charge to establish partnership agreements necessary for the launch of the operations. Besides, Serge contacted the director of the school of Amouloko, as well as the primary school teacher to begin a cycle of education in this primary school.

In August 2010, the WFL visited and repaired the Amouloko school pump, primary school with 300 students. The failure of the pump for more than 6 months was associated with an absenteeism of students (due to illness, fetching contaminated water,...). To proceed to the delivery in service of the pump will thus have direct incidences at the same time on the health of the children and on their best integration in the school system at the start of the school year on september 2010.

April 2010 : Pumping at Amouloko School failed for several months.

For an unknown reason, the pump stopped working. The children, who were accustomed to getting water at school, are forced to go and fetch water farther; the presence of children is much lower in recent months.

Cost of the repairs : 850 €.

In august 2010 : WFL team organized the repair of the Amouloko school pump.

With the help of a construction contractor from the Songhai Center (welding the pipe to be replaced) and a plumber.

Made official the partnership between WFL and the district of Amouloko at Akpro-Missérété, august 2010

Pahou sector : expertise of the solutions of purification

During the mission of summer 2010, Olusegun Taiwo and Ghalia Alem-Raquin (Master's degree, Safety environment school Quality Montpellier) have begun an evaluation, in the municipality of Pahou, existing equipments for the collection of excreta(latrines) and the purification of waste water. Such a work is essential to identify existing structures, and to realize equipments accepted by the population. To work to improve the access to the water cannot be made without a parallel work of implementation of the adequate infrastructures for the waste water treatment,so that they do not become sources of contamination of clean water resources.
